New Law Restricts Financial "Gifts" to Medical Professionals

According to this article in TimesArgus a new law which will come into effect on July 1st will restrict almost all forms of financial contributions between drug makers and physicians that prescribe the medication. This has come into effect after evidence was found that these gifts heavily influence the prescribing patterns of doctors. Representatives from pharma companies oppose the law, stating that these relationships between interactions with doctors and prescribers are necessary to explain new treatments and medication. What are your thoughts on this?

IOM speaks out on doctors fees and gifts

The Wall Street Journal Medical blog reported last week that the Institute of Medicine has made a statement about the conflicts of interest in medical practices, education and research.

Even though there is no hard evidence that suggests an influence when it comes to industry payments and gifts to doctors, they've still made suggestions that are strict in nature. They suggested:
  • That doctors should refuse all fees and gifts offered to them
  • There should be a public website established to disclose all industry payments that are made.
Read the full story here. What are your thoughts on this? Do you feel that doctors are influenced by the gifts and payments they receive from companies?

The Push Approach is no Longer Effective for Pharma Sales Reps

According to recent findings from ZS Associates found in this article in the Wall Street Journal blogs, pharma sales rep are experiencing declining success of reaching doctors in sales visits.

Sales calls and visits are no longer cutting it, and the pharma industry spends roughly $2 billion a year on salaries and expenses for sales reps. The economic pressure has caused doctors to see more and more patients, making it increasingly harder for sales reps to push benefits of their products. This might be a chance for pharma sales teams to really rethink their strategy.

Finding a new way to reach physicians

In a recent article at DMNews, they look at how the cutback in Pharma sales reps has resulted in many companies marketing to physicians turning to the digital realm. Typically, companies spend 5-10% of their budget digitally, but since the number of sales reps has decreased, this is expected to increase. Companies are also making an effor to focus on how physicians are consuming this new form of media and figuring out how they can constantly feed information to these physicians. It is estimated that 60% of all physicians are a part of some type of social network for physicians.

Jamie Peck, managing partner at Princeton-based Rosetta, had this to say about the changing marketing landscape:
“There hasn't been a seismic shift yet in pharmaceutical companies' marketing tactics to physicians, but it's approaching seismic,” he continued. “Every major pharmaceutical company is actively working on innovative ways to reach physicians on the Internet and other channels as sales reps have increasingly less access to doctors' offices.”
