The Future of Vaccines: What are scientists focusing on?

What vaccines do scientists think can be developed over the next few years? How are they trying to target cancers, allergies and addictions through their newest research?  In a white paper from Nikolai Petrovsky, Director of Endocrinology at Flinders Medical Centre, Professor of Medicine at Flinders University and founder of Vaxine, he examines the various types of targets, how scientists are working on relevant vaccines and assesses how the vaccines would trigger immunity.
  • - Cancer Vaccines: With the treatment from this vaccine, the immune system is reworked to attack and neutralize the molecules derived from cell tissues.  A cellular immune response is triggered against the cancer cells. The only approved vaccine to fight cancer is Sipuleucel-T vaccine (Provenge) to fight prostate cancer.
  • - Allergy Vaccines: In these vaccines, doses of the antigens to produce immune response against the allergens
  • - Drug Addictions: Many of these vaccines act to neutralize or destroy the effects of the chemicals before they are able to reach the bran and act
The article also looks at vaccine adjuvants, obesity Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease Vaccines. Read the full article here.

This fall at BioProcess International, we'll be bringing some of the biggest topic in vaccines to the discussion table including the presentation Reinventing the Gene Vaccine: Stabilization and Delivery of Self-amplifying mRNA from Luis Brito, Ph.D., Head, Formulation Science, Novartis Vaccines and Innovative Characterization Methods to Identify an Optimal Vaccine Drug Product Formulation from Patrick Ahl, Ph.D., Assistant Principal Scientist, Vaccine Drug Product Development, Merck Research Labs.  For more information on these sessions and the rest of the program, download the agenda.  If you'd like to join us this October 20-23, 2014 in Boston for the event, as a reader of this blog when you register to join us and mention code BPI14BLOG, you can save 20% off the standard rate.

What field do you think - cancer, drug addiction or obesity - is in need of an FDA approved vaccine the most?
