Glaxo Wins FDA Approval to Sell H1N1 Vaccine

NBC reports that Glaxo has won FDA approval to sell the popular H1N1 vaccine. The British company said on Tuesday the Food and Drug Administration had approved a modified version of its FluLaval seasonal flu vaccine containing the new H1N1 strain.

The green light clears the way for it to fill a order for 7.6 million doses from the U.S. government.

Tuesday's H1N1 Summit Webcast

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan joined on Tuesday with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases Dr. Anne Schuchat to discuss H1N1 preparedness and answer questions from the public.

Dr. Schuchat and Secretary Sebelius outlined the four pillars of President Obama’s “National Framework for Response”—surveillance, community mitigation, vaccination, and communication—and detailed planning and preparedness efforts used by the federal government to facilitate these goals.

Secretary Napolitano highlighted the role DHS plays as federal coordinator during public health emergencies, particularly by working closely and communicating clearly with state and local first responders and emergency communicators during a health emergency.

Secretary Duncan and Secretary Sebelius stressed the federal government’s ongoing commitment to reach out to parents and the education community to help them prepare for the upcoming school year.

Vical's H1N1 vaccines tested

According to SignOnSanDiego.com, Vical has tested their H1N1 flu vaccines on animals, and found the tests to be successful. Their delivery method is unique, injecting genetic material, such as DNA or RNA, that expresses a protein that induces an immune response. This method is successful on animals, but has not yet been marketed for humans.

Big Pharma will donate H1N1 vaccines

According to Pharmaceutical Technology, Sanofi-Aventis will donate at least 100 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine to the WHO for developing countries. Once production of the vaccine begins, they will also save 10% of production for developing countries.

The WHO responded:
"It is gratifying that vaccine manufacturers are demonstrating their solidarity with the WHO in protecting the health of the world's poorer people: influenza knows no boundaries and so to protect people in one country is to protect us all."
